Institut Opinòmetre has conducted the Survey of Linguistic Uses of the Catalan population (EULP 2018)

L’Institut Opinòmetre has conducted the Survey of Linguistic Uses of the Catalan population (EULP 2018) between the months of June and September 2018.

The Survey on the linguistic uses of the 2018 population is an official statistical activity integrated in the corresponding Annual Statistical Action Program that unfolds the Statistical Plan Law of Catalonia 2017-2020. The responsible bodies are the Department of Culture, through the General Directorate of Linguistic Policy, and Idescat.

EULP 2018 is the fourth edition of the Statistics on linguistic uses in Catalonia, which was already done in 2003, 2008 and 2013. The Survey, with the questionnaire available in Catalan, Spanish and Occitan, follows the methodology Multi-channel so that the respondents can answer it through one of the three possible channels: Internet, telephone or face-to-face.

The main objective of the EULP 2018 is to know the linguistic identification and uses of Catalan and other languages in the different spaces of personal relation of the population in Catalonia, with special interest in the situation of the use of Catalan. A secondary objective, linked to the fact that it is a periodic survey, is to observe the evolution of linguistic uses over time.

There are interviewed 9,000 people distributed throughout the territory over 15 years of age and included in the Population Register of Catalonia on January 1, 2018.

The 2018 edition has been expanded with 1,500 surveys more than the 2013 sample, which was 7,500. The extension of the sample will improve the territorial perspective, especially to deepen the knowledge of the linguistic reality of the metropolitan areas.

Field work in the 2013 and 2018 edition has been carried out by the Institut Opinòmetre
